Stumpy captured hearts as a duckling after he was born with two extra limbs which he carried tucked behind the two legs that he walked on.

Stumpy was kept in a pen at Warrawee Duck Farm in the New Forest, Hampshire, as his owner feared his extra limbs may get caught in brambles.

But last year, Stumpy was back in the limelight again after he got one of his spare limbs caught in a fence surrounding his pen and had to have it removed by a vet.

Now, the 14-month-old drake is just like any other duck after his third leg turned black and dropped off.

Just two stumps remain as a clue to his unusual start in life.

Farm owner Nicky Janaway, 44, said: "A couple of weeks ago we noticed Stumpy's spare leg had started to change colour.

"We kept an eye on it but it got more and more black.

"When I got Stumpy out of bed at 6am his leg was still there, but in the afternoon it was gone.

"He has probably caught it on something while walking about the farm.

"He isn't in pain and and he's completely oblivious to the fact that he now just has two legs.

"Where his spare legs once were there are now just stumps - so he really is Stumpy by name and Stumpy by nature."

Stumpy, who is one of 3,000 ducks at the farm, was lucky to survive the rare mutation - another case was recorded in Queensland Australia in 2002 where a duckling called Jake was born with four legs but died soon after
