Between 1969 and 1979, 101 of the cars were made. Although it was built out of virtually the same parts as the Wartburg -- an East German sedan -- the RS1000 has a top speed of 180 kilometers per hour (112 miles per hour). http://www.spiegel.de/img/0,1020,1186822,00.jpg http://www.spiegel.de/img/0,1020,1186832,00.jpg Race car driver Heinz Melkus, who died in 2005, designed and built the unique vehicles. His vision was to create an East German race car that could be driven on roads. His son Peter (right) and grandson Sepp have revived the Melkus brand, building a limited edition of the cars in their forefather's memory. They are also working on a successor to the RS1000, which Heinz Melkus had dreamed of building. http://www.spiegel.de/img/0,1020,1186836,00.jpg The new cars are being built the same way as the ones in the 1970s. A team of 10 has been making the new run of RS1000s by hand in a workshop near the east German city of Dresden. http://www.spiegel.de/fotostrecke/0,5538,31713,00.html
