BMW opens revamped museum in Munich, Germany

Mercedes-Benz has one in Stuttgart, Porsche will complete construction of its latest at year's end at Zuffenhausen, and now most recently, BMW has joined the branded auto museum soiree with the reopening of its 53,000 square foot facility near its Munich, Germany headquarters.

The revamped museum has taken over two years to complete and ingeniously incorporates the original "bowl" building in its new design, penned by Atelier Brueckner. More than 120 exhibits are set to portray the German brand's 90 years of automaking history and features original 1950s 507 roadsters, an variety of "art cars" by such painters as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, funny-looking Isetta compact cars, and a 2004 hydrogen H2R racecar.

During the opening ceremony, BMW chairman Dr. Norbert Reithofer welcomed special guest Eberhard von Kuenheim who served as the former chairman of BMW in 1973 when the first museum was established. Also in attendance were 350 BMW Group apprentices who represented the next-generation of BMW movers and shakers.

In addition to all the cars on display, there is a gift shop for must-have souvenirs and hard to find memorabilia, educational exhibition programs for kids, and an upscale full-service cafe (aptly named Cafe M1) separated into restaurant, lounge, and bar.

BMW expects around 400,000 visitors per year to stop by the museum, up 150,000 compared to the previous facility. The new museum will open to the public beginning June 21. For more information, be sure to check out the official website.
