Beckham out for England

David Beckham has pulled out of the England squad to face Sweden in Gothenburg on Wednesday.
Beckham suffered a calf injury playing for Real Madrid during his side's 5-1 win over Sevilla on Sunday.

He went off near the end after a heavy challenge from Jose Luis Marti but turned up when the England party met at their training base in St Albans.

The England captain was assessed by the national team's medical staff on Monday and is now set to return to Spain.

Beckham's loss is a blow to an already depleted squad with Michael Owen, Ashley Cole and Kieron Dyer also out because of injury.

Sol Campbell, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Wayne Bridge and Frank Lampard are missing as well as they have been rested.

Steven Gerrard and John Terry are the likely candidates to take over the captaincy.

Manchester City's Shaun Wright-Phillips is set to get his chance to impress on the right of midfield - where Beckham would have played - but only if he overcomes an ankle knock.
