The number of the people that died in hospitals before the 20th century was extremely increased due to the infection caused by surgery wounds. Afterwards, people realized that when the bacteria touches the point where a cut was made, it would poison the blood stream and risk life, therefore, people improved their hygienic habits in operations and gave antiseptic to keep the infected area without harm bacteria. In fact, what was really necessary, was an antiseptic that could be taken inside of the body and demolish the bacteria that had invaded the body.
Thanks to that day in 1928, the coincidence that was made by Alexander Fleming with his staphylococci culture, Penicillin has saved number of people lives that no one could ever imagine before due to his huge effect in demolish many of the bacteria that have bothered human race for thousands of years
